The students of the Faculty of Political Science in Zagreb participated to a guided tour in the city of Zagreb, which focused on the challenges of memorialization of WWII victims in the city. After the guided tour, the students had the task to choose one of the visited locations and prepare a creative proposal on how to improve memorialization and remembrance practices with the aim of making the location more relevant and visible in the urban context of the city.
Among the locations visited, some of the most relevant include:
- Botanical gardens: site of one of the most prominent actions of the resistance movement in the city of Zagreb. Today the memorials present at the locations are worn and damaged by natural elements, and are not visible and known by the citizens.
- Square of the Victims of Fascism: the square is interesting as it changed its name over time – depending on political changes -, and it is one of the few locations in Zagreb dedicated to victims of WWII. Around the square, are different buldings that were used as prisons for enemies of the Ustasha regime, which are today completely forgotten and not memorialized.
- Zagreb Synagogue: the Synagogue of Zagreb was completely demolished by the Ustasha forces in 1941 and has been never rebuilt. Today, there is only a small memorial plaque on the site.
- Zagrebački zbor: from June 1941, the location was used as a transit camp for Jews, Serbs, communists, and members of the resistance, before their internment into different concentration camps. This location is today part of a students' complex and there is no mention of the history of the people who were interned there during WWII.
The focus on forgotten and less memorialized locations contributed to motivate the students to look for alternative and innovative ways and solutions how to further engage with the remembrance of the victims of WWII in the context of the city they live in.
